Deerhound Club Northern Limited Show 2015 Critique

I was thrilled with the number of dogs entered and would like to thank everybody who supported the show and those worked hard to put it all together. Almost without exception my entry were sound and well-muscled and moved exceptionally well coming and going. A lot were also very hairy and could have done with a bit of a tidy up. I am not of a fan of the ‘sculptured’ look but a tidy does help show the dog off to its best. Eyes in general were on the light side but on the plus side thighs were huge and muscle a plenty. I couldn’t see many feet in the grass so they have mostly gone uncommented on!

I adored this puppy. So masculine and beautiful. Dark, dark eye, gorgeous expression and the blackest of pigments. Stands over a lot of ground and has a correct top line. Plenty of bone, good feet, harshest of coats and moved lightly, effortlessly and covered a lot of ground. Pleased to award him BPIS

2nd Kaleginy The Ghillie At Aonachdubh
9 month old lighter grey puppy.  Such a dark eye and a faraway expression with dark pigment. He had one of the best heads of the day. Pleasing length and strength to his neck. A little upright in front and behind. Good bone, plenty of width to second thigh and strong rear drive. A little unsettled in the ring and holding himself a little tense today.

Another lovely head. Smallest of ears, dark eyes and very soft expression. Incredibly strong, muscular and well arched neck in one so young. Good front and feet. Correct spring of pastern. Held his top line well on the move and moved with such width and drive. Didn’t quite move as well in unbeaten dogs.

2nd Leoch Jamie Of Fintalloch
Curvy 19th month old lighter grey lad. Eye a little light, expression soft and pleasing.  Really well arched strong neck, particularly at the nape.  Glorious top line, a under exaggerated but powerful dog to go over.  Lacklustre moving today

1st Arrachogaidh Bhaidenach
Dark harsh coated young dog of 22 months.  I would have preferred a darker eye but he has a lovely head and expression and neat ears. Generally overall I would have preferred more length and angulation. Very strong hindquarters and plenty of width behind. Well muscled.

Such a nice class of dogs. A very close call between 1 & 2. My winner has the softest of expressions, although I would prefer a darker eye. Incredibly strong over his well arched neck and top line.  At just over two he still needs more time to mature and possibly deepen but I loved the fact he stands over plenty of ground and his movement won him his class. So positive and true from side profile and totally true coming and going with such a strong second thigh and drive.  Much could be said of my RBD

2nd Teviotdale Banner Blue    Reserve Best Dog
I really had to split hairs to place these dogs as I liked them both. This nearly three year old lad had more maturity than 1. Pleasing shape, good length, deep, powerful, strong and moved oh so soundly. A slightly lighter eye and a tiny bit less sparkle than 1 was how I made my choice in the end. A very nice dog.

1st Killoeter Quern At Cullinmore  Upstanding male of 4yrs old . Lovely head, although eye could be darker. Neat ears, very good front and good return of upper arm, with a correct spring of pastern.  He moved very soundly and has great width behind. Tends to hold his top line a little too much and has a rather exaggerated droop to croup. Plenty of muscle helping provide great drive behind.
 2ndCusidh Homecoming
Dark, harsh coated, hazel eyed 6yr old dog with good ears and a well arched neck and a good front fore chest. Plenty of return of upper arm, slightly herring gutted and looked a little
Weak through the hocks today. Moved out well.

1st Hearthstane Glen Garioch  Probably the hairiest, smallest, soundest dog on the day!  8year old lad. Underneath all the coat which was harsh but long, I found a very well constructed hound. So sound and with plenty of width and drive, loving his day. With a tidy up he is a very good veteran contender.  Made me smile with his enthusiasm.

2nd Menteith Declan At Altimarlach
Finer, lighter type than 1. Handsome head, smallest of ears, dark eye. Neat well knuckled feet. Balanced dog in profile and moved very, very soundly, just tended to flatten the top line on the move.

PB 4/2
1st Sorimsway Field Of Poppies  A pretty girl. Dark eye, small ears and the sweetest of expressions.  A little upright in front at the moment.  Plenty of bone and harsh dark coat. Well presented, very good bend of stifle and moved very well, although tended to flatten her top line. She has a nice tone to her well-developed muscles. Ribbed back nicely and moved very soundly coming and going and in profile.

2nd Cookland Fionn Of Anmialchu
Sadly impossible to judge this puppy as she was over excited and refused to be handled. Hopefully she will settle next time out but gave her handler the run around today.

JB 3/2
1st Albaeirn Marcella . 16 month old girl with a more femine and just as adorable head as her brother. Neatest of ears, strong well arched neck traveling into a good top line. Well angulated fore and aft and gives the feel of real power. Moved very well but a little downhill at present. She has plenty of time to come up again.

2nd Leoch Juniper Of Fintalloch
17month old pretty bitch. Hazel eye, lovely head and one of the best aquiline noses of the day. Lighter in frame than 1, and at present a little ewe necked and weaker in front causing her to travel a little downhill.  At the very raw stage they go through at the moment.

SBB 4/3
1st Breesfalt Isabella to Arrachogaidh  5yr old girl with a lovely length to her. Deep chested with a great sweep of stifle she moves very well coming and going, just a little unsteady in profile. Would prefer a longer neck and a little more fore chest. Very correct top line and strong loins.

2nd Cufiadh Kelpie
Lighter grey girl with a very pretty head.  Good ears.
Very underweight at present. Neck a little short and shoulder placement a little far forward.  Good bend of stifle and stood much better when she was more relaxed.

1st Chuilinn Berengaria     Best Bitch & BIS
Dark 19month old bitch of lovely proportions in a nice class of bitches. A lovely feminine head and a good pigment.  I would have preferred a darker eye. Small neat, well folded ears. Neck well arched. Well angulated front, plenty of return of upper arm. Deep chest, good tuck up. All curves, nice droop to croup and good bend of stifle with low set on hocks. Moved incredibly well. Sound and true in all ways.

2ndDorrator Garvey
It seems I like this litter! Another nice bitch, a little smaller in stature than my winner. Neat ears, plenty of width to her neck leading in to a very good front, elbow well underneath her. Lovely sweep to her top line and generally more width than you would expect from first impressions. Moved very well and true but just a little lacklustre at times.

1st Chuilinn Windflower   Reserve Best Bitch.
Pretty lighter grey 3yr old. Eye a tad light, well folded ear held high set. Good neck, shoulder placement a little far forward leading to her a tad more upright in front.  Great spring of rib and pleasing top line.  Another sound mover, great width of second thigh and well-muscled, moving sound and true.

2nd Cotherstone Brouge At Altimarlach
On my first impression she looked like my winner. A beautiful bitch with a lovely head. Stood up proudly, all curves.  Side profile moving she wasn’t quite what I was looking for but she moved well coming and going and is an attractive bitch. Stood a little tight through the top line in the last line up.

OB 3/2
1st Fintralgor Red Red Rose . I liked this girls shape, unexaggerated and pleasing to the eye. Slightly light eye and very hairy ears. Very good front feet could be more knuckled.  Strode out well but has a slightly rolling gait, slightly closer behind than some of the others today but a lovely strong powerful type of girl, good strong loins, I would have prefered a little more tuck up.

2nd Gentiehun Tulip of Kaleginy
A lighter grey bitch with good ear carriage. A little short in foreface and muzzle. I would prefer a darker pigment. She has plenty of width of bone to carry a good muscle base and is balanced fore and aft. Lovely width to second thigh.

1st Riding The Wind With Cusidh     Best Veteran
I loved my veteran winner. At 11 years old she is still game. Loveliest of heads, dark eye and small rose ear. The most elegant shaped neck, good arch in to correct top line. Great spring of pastern that comes from the good front. Broad drooping hips, I would preferred her to have a little more length overall. Hind end as well angulated as front, good feet. Moved soundly.
